Education

Sophie Yukiko is a German-American artist workingacross film and theater, with a particular focus on writing and performance. Her artistic practice explores the aesthetics, politics, and forms ofsubculture through text, dance, and acting. Influenced by undergroundcommunities and subcultural dance scenes, her work centers on questions of ritual, love, violence, ancestry and collective experiences.

After beginning her professional career as acommercial dancer in 2009, Sophie traveled to Los Angeles, Amsterdam and NewYork City to practice and extend her craft.

During this time, she became part of the Ballroom and Voguing scene — an experience that profoundly shaped her artistic and political perspective and ultimately led her toward narrative and text-based work.

Since 2020, Sophie Yukiko has worked as a writer and dramaturg. She joined the writers’ room for the Disney project Pauline, contributing several treatments and screenplay drafts as well as the Script for Episode 2. Until 2022, she was a staff writer at the Cologne-based production company Bildundtonfabrik, where she collaborated on a range of television anddevelopment projects.

Alongside her screenwriting work, Sophie is currently developing her debut literary novel Vielleicht ist es eine Liebesgeschichte (“Maybe It’s a Love Story”). In February 2026, she presented excerpts from the work-in-progress alongside Marie Rosa Tietjen and Cristiana Angelescu at the Red Salon of Volksbühne Berlin. The novel explores whether romantic love cansurvive under the pressures of capitalism through the story of two women whoserelationship slowly unravels.

Her most recent stage work, RITUAL BPM, examined the Black origins of Techno culture and was presented at Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf and Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. In December 2026, Sophie Yukiko will premiere her new stage work BODEN, created together with Marie Zoe Buchholz, at Tanzhaus NRW and HAU Hebbel am Ufer. In this duet, the two Voguing performers reinterpret the archetype of the witch.

As one of the co-founding forces of the German Ballroom scene, Sophie Yukiko is also the Mother of an international House. Today, more than 80 members across six countries and two continents are united under the name House of Laveaux. In June 2025, she received the Ballroom title “Legend.”

With her extensive experience in the fields of show and event she today supports productions as a Choreographer and Art Director, merging high arts concepts with cultural forms and aesthetics.
